As you may know, Maine Revenue Services is in the midst of a multi-year effort to modernize its online system for filing, paying, and managing state taxes. The new platform, which is called the Maine Tax Portal, is now open for 20 new Maine taxes, fees, and programs including individual income taxes.
The Maine Tax Portal replaces I-File and EZ Pay and expands MRS’s current online services, making filing, managing, and paying Maine taxes, fees, and programs faster, easier, and more convenient for all taxpayers.
On the new system, in addition to paying and filing state taxes, taxpayers can manage payment arrangements, check balances, and view notices from MRS 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Individual income taxpayers who use third-party, self-service software to prepare and file taxes can continue to use those services, and do not need to set up a Maine Tax Portal account.
Maine Revenue Services understands change can be challenging, and tax time can be stressful. We’re confident the Maine Tax Portal will make managing state taxes much easier, whether you’re an individual, a business owner, tax professional, or the person responsible for managing your company’s taxes.
If you have not yet used the Maine Tax Portal, here’s what you need to do:
Learn how you can use the Maine Tax Portal. MRS is offering free, live training webinars on how to use the Maine Tax Portal through April 11, 2024. Each webinar focuses on a specific tax, fee, or program. You only need to attend only one session for the type of Maine tax, fee, or program that pertains to you. MRS has training videos, and other informational resources online at maine.gov/revenue/portal.
Coordinate with your tax professionals. If you have third-party tax professionals prepare your individual income taxes, they can continue to use the same Modernized e-File (known as MeF) platform that they have been using to do so. If tax professionals prepare your business taxes, both you and your tax professionals will need to create your own accounts on the Maine Tax Portal. Once you have done that, you will need to authorize your tax professionals to access your account. Step-by-step instructions and resources are available on maine.gov/revenue/portal.
Understand the benefits of the Maine Tax Portal. Even if you’re not required to set up a Maine Tax Portal account for the type of taxes you pay, there are some advantages to doing so. The Maine Tax Portal makes it easy to manage payment arrangements, check on balances and more. Go to revenue.maine.gov and select the “Create a Username” prompt to get started.
Maine Revenue Services is committed to making the transition to the Maine Tax Portal as seamless as possible for all Maine taxpayers.
You can send questions by email to taxpayerassist@maine.gov with “MTP” in the subject line or by calling MRS at 207-624-9784.
Michael Fortin is the director of promotion for the Maine Tax Portal at Maine Revenue Services, a bureau of the Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services.
