The Greater Portland Transit District on Monday rolled out its new Husky Line buses connecting Gorham, Westbrook and Portland with University of Southern Maine campuses in Portland and Gorham.
Branded with the USM blue and white husky mascot, the Husky Line is a key initiative of METRO’s Transit West Project announced last year, offering more frequent connections for students and the commuting public.
Besides linking USM campuses in Gorham and Portland and introducing transit to the Town of Gorham, the new route will increase the level service along the William Clark Drive/Main Street corridor in Westbrook and the Brighton Avenue corridor in Portland.
“As a community-engaged university, USM is delighted that the Husky Line will not only benefit our students, but also people living in Gorham, Westbrook and other surrounding towns,” said USM President Glenn Cummings in a statement. “This is a game-changer for our university and for the entire region.”
METRO General Manager Greg Jordan said, “high quality and innovative public transit is in demand in the greater Portland region and especially in the urban core.” He added that the Transit West Project “will improve mobility, increase access affordable transportation and help spur our region’s economic competitiveness.”
For those who are interested in trying out the new Husky Line, free rides are being offered though this Wednesday, Aug. 29.
Rides are also free through Wednesday on the recently launched Route 3 crosstown service, a local route connecting many areas of Westbrook with South Portland, including the Anthem Office Park, Target Shopping Plaza and Husson University/County Road Industrial Park.
Portland/Riverton Route 3 also links to Route 5, connecting Westbrook passengers to the Portland Jetport, UNUM, Hadlock Field, Maine Medical Center and downtown Portland without transferring.
