After nearly two months, the southbound section of I-295 between Gardiner and Topsham is open again to traffic, 20 days ahead of schedule.
The 18-mile section of highway, which was shut down June 15 for a major overhaul, reopened Saturday evening, according to Blethen Maine News Service. Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner David Cole told the news service the project went smoothly, and that incentives for New Hampshire contractor Pike Industries, subcontractors and DOT employees helped complete the project before the Aug. 30 deadline. Pike Industries had a bonus of up to $2 million in its $28.5 million contract for finishing early. The new road is expected to last more than 20 years, according to the news service.
Mainebiz in May spoke with Joyce Taylor, the project's coordinator, about the mysterious chemical reaction that made the project necessary and the Maine DOT's plans for a future closure of I-295's northbound lanes, in Detour ahead.
