More cuts at Press Herald

In the wake of mounting budget problems, the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram is continuing to slim down, both in staffing numbers and sections of its daily newspaper.

The Press Herald reported yesterday that two union employees and an "undisclosed" number of managers were laid off. The losses were lower than expected because some staffers volunteered to take unpaid leaves, the paper said. In July, Press Herald officials said they planned to cut roughly 10% of the newsroom's roughly 85 full-time equivalent positions.

Management also is cutting some sections, including the Maine Sunday Telegram's Maine/New England section, and trimming op-ed content and local and state coverage.
