After a $6.5 million renovation, the former Plummer School in Falmouth officially reopened as Plummer Senior Living following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 13 attended by project partners and local dignitaries.
The new independent senior living community is adjacent to OceanView at Falmouth Retirement Community and was designed for middle-income seniors age 55+, offering rents starting at $1,225/month with no buy-ins.
“There is a need for more flexible, independent living for Maine seniors,” John Wasileski, president of Sea Coast Management Co., which owns Plummer Senior Living, said in a news release. “These low-maintenance apartments have a lot of character and provide a way for seniors to transition into their next phase of life with ease. Here they can stop working on their house and start living at their home.”
Plummer Senior Living is historically preserved to keep much of the original features of what used to be the Plummer School for 80 years. Sea Coast Management and Developers Collaborative, contractor for the project, recently received a 2017 Maine Preservation Honor Award for their work restoring the campus. Retained features include the gym, which will serve as a community room, the theater stage and elements of the classrooms throughout each home.
“Plummer School is an iconic fixture in this community and we wanted to be sure we honored its heritage,” said Wasileski. “It’s really fun to think that potential residents may have actually attended school here and now have that history preserved in their home.”
Sea Coast Management Co., which started in 1989, purchased the school in 2013 from the town of Falmouth for $750,000. Investment for renovation was $6.5 million. The project received a 20% tax credit, available through the Department of Interior for the rehabilitation of historic, income-producing buildings.
Sea Coast is a developer, owner and operator of market-rate senior-living communities — including OceanView at Falmouth and Highland Green in Topsham.
