Idexx reaches fairness pact with FTC

Westbrook-based Idexx Laboratories has come to an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission to end an investigation into allegations that the company engaged in unfair methods of competition.

The FTC began investigating Idexx in early 2010, looking into exclusive distribution agreements the company had with three veterinary supply companies.

Those three national distributors — MWI Veterinary Supply Inc., Butler Schein Animal Health and Webster Veterinary — agreed to carry Idexx products exclusively.

In April, the company announced plans to stop an exclusive agreement with one of those companies as a way to satisfy FTC officials. In a press release this week, Idexx announced it has agreed to stop its exclusive agreement with MWI starting Jan. 1, 2013.

The deal signed this week, which Idexx CEO Jonathan Ayers called a milestone, will now require approval by the FTC commissioners.
