Market Basket expanding to Maine

The Massachusetts-based grocery chain Market Basket is expanding to Biddeford, according to the Journal Tribune.

The paper reported that the city's economic development director, Daniel Stevenson, confirmed that the discount grocery store plans to open in Biddeford in the summer or fall of 2013.

Stevenson told the paper that the company plans to invest $11 million to redevelop a former Lowe's building at The Shops at Biddeford Crossing that has been empty since 2011.

Stevenson told the paper that the 108,000-square-foot market, bakery and café will hire between 500 and 600 employees, 150 of those full time. The city's internal review of the company's plans are almost complete.
