Idled concrete plants to reopen

Stillwater-based construction company Sargent Corp. has acquired the concrete mixing operations of GE Goding & Son Inc., which includes four plants in northern and Down East Maine.

The sale to Sargent Materials, a subsidiary of the earthworks company, includes four concrete ready-mix plants in Lincoln, Millinocket, Woodland and East Machias, all shuttered nearly a year ago by Lincoln-based GE Goding, according to a press release from the company. Sargent plans to refurbish the Lincoln and East Machias plants first, followed by the Millinocket plant, and evaluate the future of the Woodland facility. The company hopes to reopen the plants in the spring and could rehire laid-off Goding employees. Herb Sargent, president of Sargent Corp., said the company would seek applications when appropriate for the various locations, but did not specify how many employees would be hired.

The acquisition also includes several aggregate materials resources in the region, according to the release. GE Goding closed last year after its regular winter layoff season, and Sargent first announced its intentions to buy the company in August, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Sargent Corp. specializes in site preparation and airport, highway and landfill construction, and has over 400 employees, according to information the company provided to Mainebiz. The company reported 2008 revenues of $123 million, making it the second largest construction company in the state.
