The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has hired former Portland Press Herald editor John Porter as its new president.
Porter beat out four other top applicants for the post, which he will assume Jan. 25, according to a press release from the chamber. Currently, Porter is the principal and founder of John Porter Public Strategies, a South Portland-based communications and government relations firm that helped secure the $25.4 million federal grant for the Three Ring Binder broadband expansion project, led by GWI. Prior to launching that company last year, Porter spent nearly 20 years at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, 10 of those as editorial page editor, before leaving in June when the paper's owner, Blethen Maine Newspapers, was sold to MaineToday Media Inc.
Jerry Whalen, chair of the search committee, said the chamber is "confident that [Porter] will provide the transforming leadership we need for a much more proactive chamber in the future," according to the release. Porter will fill a spot left available in June when the chamber's executive committee dismissed former president Candy Guerette for alleged poor performance.
