Immigration employment fines down from 2011

The state fined eight employers a total of nearly $80,000 in 2012 for a range of violations related to immigration employment.

The number of violations rose from six to eight over 2011, but the total dollar amount was down some $70,000 from last year, when it totaled $150,018, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Fines are levied when irregularities are detected in a business' I-9 forms, documents maintained by employers to validate the identity and work eligibility of their employees.

I-9 forms were investigated 22 times in 2012, down slightly from 2011's total of 23, but far above 2010 and 2009, when there were 11 and five inspections, respectively. Fines totaled $7,013 in 2010 and $9,753 in 2009, when just a single employer was fined.

The fines come following investigations and audits by the Homeland Security Investigations division of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with the five most costly fines assessed against:

• Maine International Labor Inc. of West Gardiner, $13,898.50

• My Tai Inc. of Presque Isle, $13,744

• Artstock Inc., aka Artist & Craftsman Supply Co., of Portland, $12,584

• New Fay Da Restaurant Inc., aka Happy China Buffet, of Bangor, $11,220

• Farrens Harvesting and Land Leveling Inc. of Columbia, $9,490
