Although the drought that has afflicted Maine farmers for much of the summer has been bad news for crops like lettuce and broccoli, the state’s upcoming apple season appears to have weathered the storm, or lack thereof.
The Kennebec Journal spoke to three central Maine apple farmers to find out how the upcoming season looks, including Marilyn Meyerhans of the Manchester-based Lakeside Orchards, who told the paper that the dry conditions may have a silver lining.
“There wasn’t the moisture to create scabbing problems and fungus,” Meyerhans told the Kennebec Journal. “The quality of the fruit is really good, and in some ways, the drought was good for apples because the disease pressure was lower.”
