Handy’s Market and Café owner Sean Ireland has completed construction of a new carriage house — Wi-Fi, cafe-style seating on the first floor, and an upstairs “community board room” — behind the business, The Forecaster reported.
The business was the former Andy’s Handy Store.
At an open house, some people told the newspaper they miss the old convenience store, which had an ice cream window, but said the improved Handy’s is a great thing for Yarmouth.
On its Facebook page, Handy’s boasts a partiality for fresh and locally sourced products such as fresh bread locally baked, Maine-made beer, U.S.-made wines and locally made meats, veggie burgers and cheeses.
The location also includes an OTTO Pizza. Monday’s grand opening featured live music and was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with attendees, including OTTO’s owners Mike Keon and Anthony Allen.
The improvement comes in the midst of overall economic development plans in Yarmouth, part of which includes the development of character-based codes to ensure growth and development in a manner complementary to the Yarmouth village character and history.
Of Handy’s, Yarmouth resident Steve Goodwin told The Forecaster, “I think it’ll be great for people in the local community, plus when tourists come for the clam festival. This will be a gold mine.”
