The owner of the Windward House bed-and-breakfast in Camden is seeking a town-wide referendum that would allow her to serve dinner to overnight guests.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Camden Board of Selectmen has previously rejected Kristen Bifulco’s request to get a town-wide referendum that would ask residents whether or not they want to essentially remove a zoning restriction that prevents her inn from serving dinner.
Now, Bifulco is seeking to collect 279 signatures from residents for a petition that would put the question on the town’s November ballot. She hopes to lift the ban by amending a zoning rule that currently restricts inns on a northern section of Route 1 in Camden from serving dinner if they are within 500 feet of a zone that permits restaurants.
The BDN noted that Bifulco’s proposed change has been opposed by some in the community who said it would hurt business for downtown restaurants. But Bifulco has indicated it’s a matter of fairness that would put her inn on equal footing with other inns located in zones that allow the serving of dinner — stating the change would encourage more outside visitors.
