Three family-owned businesses took home honors last night at the 2010 Maine Family Business Awards held at the Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland.
The Institute for Family-Owned Business each year selects the winners out the state's 36,000 family-owned companies based on nominations and applications. Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards in Cumberland won the Maddy Corson Award, given to businesses with fewer than 25 employees. The property has been in the Sweetser family for nearly 200 years, and is currently owned by Gregg Sweetser. The seasonal business has 1,200 trees that produce 39 varieties of apples.
Waterville-based Marden's Surplus & Salvage Inc. won the Leon Gorman Award for businesses with 25 or more employees. Marden's has 14 discount retail stores and was founded in 1964 by Harold "Mickey" Marden, father of current owner Harold "Ham" Marden. Mancini Electric in Portland, owned by Tony Mancini, received the honorable mention for the Leon Gorman Award.
The Shep Lee award for community service was given to insurance firm GHM Agency in Waterville, owned by Paul Mitchell.
