Insurance salesman to return $162K to elderly

An Ohio-based dental insurance salesman will return $162,000 to customers in Maine after a state investigation found his policies did not deliver the promised services.

The state’s Bureau of Insurance released on Thursday its consent agreement with Paul A. Granzier, the president of an Ohio-based insurance company called Dental 2U. According to the consent agreement, Granzier sold dental insurance to nursing home residents in the state, saying the plan would provide customers access to regular visits by dentists. The state’s investigation found that Granzier had not secured an agreement with a dental care provider at the time he was selling the plans. Unable to provide access to a network of dentists as promised, Granzier contracted with a company called Tooth Protectors Inc. to have dental hygienists visit the nursing homes in early 2010.

The state began receiving complaints about Dental 2U’s failure to provide access to a network of dentists, as promised, and the insurer ended its program by July 2011. The state’s order calls for Dental 2U to return all premiums its customers paid, minus any claims paid on their behalf.
