InterMed, Maine’s largest physician-owned and physician-led medical group, has promoted Theresa Falcon from interim chief operating officer to fill the role permanently.
As COO, Falcon will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing clinical and business operations.
“Theresa quickly rose to the top of a field of impressive candidates sourced through our nationwide search,” said CEO Roger Poitras. “From the time she joined InterMed in 2020, our organization has benefitted from Theresa’s keen strategic focus, outstanding work ethic and clear commitment to our mission and values.
"Her leadership will certainly be a catalyst for the growth and success of our organization.”
As a newly minted director of strategic operations, Falcon led InterMed's pandemic response and initiated one of the state’s first drive-thru testing sites for patients. She also facilitated the organization’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic.
Falcon has had roles in system development at MaineHealth, advisory services at Strata Decision Technology in Chicago, as well as improving labor productivity at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
She received her master’s in health administration at Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s in business administration from Villanova University.
“InterMed is positioned to meaningfully influence the wellness of Mainers as the state’s premier primary care and multi-specialty group,” Falcon said. “It’s exhilarating to be part of that larger purpose and a privilege to work with our physician owner-operators.”
InterMed also said it has promoted Wai-Houng Leung to chief information officer. Leung is an executive leadership team member and has administrative and strategic oversight of information technology and business intelligence.
“I have always had a passion for technology,” said Leung. “I have always loved supporting the community where I live. This role at InterMed allows me to bring them together in a culture that prizes innovation, continuous improvement, and teamwork. I look forward to moving healthcare IT forward with the fantastic InterMed team to help provide the best experience for all our patients.”
Since joining InterMed in 2020 as the company’s director of information technology, Leung has improved the organization’s information system and network reliability and implemented new security standards to protect against cyber threats. Before joining InterMed, he worked at Martin’s Point Health Care for 11 years.
He volunteers on the board of the Animal Refuge League in Portland and is a University of Southern Maine graduate.
“The leadership skills and expertise Wai has developed over more than 20 years in information technology and 15 years in health care will continue to serve our patients and team members well as he advances our digital and virtual care strategies,” said Poitras. “With Wai’s knowledge and skills, InterMed will enhance customer service, access and on-demand healthcare services."
Established in 1993, InterMed serves primary care patients at sites in Portland, South Portland and Yarmouth.
