Investors have filed a lawsuit against a Gorham treasure hunter in an attempt to take over an embattled operation to salvage $3 billion in platinum from a shipwreck 50 miles off Cape Cod.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the 220-foot Sea Hunter vessel that explorer Greg Brooks used to hunt for shipwrecks has been listed for sale for $2.95 million in Yachting World magazine and its crew has been laid off. Brooks declined to comment to the paper on the advice of his attorney, but an engineer for Brooks’ company, Sub Sea Research, said the hunt for treasure aboard the sunken USS Nicholson has not been abandoned and that new investors have backed salvage attempts to continue next spring.
The paper reported a group of 18 investors led by Daniel Stochel, who heads the New York firm Equitron Capital Management, have now formed their own company, Mission Recovery, and are asking a U.S. District Court to strip Brooks of rights to salvage the ship.
