The Canadian-based J.D. Irving wants eventually to sell the 400 lots it now leases on the Fish River lakes chain in Northern Maine as part of a larger development plan for 50,000 acres it owns north and west of Caribou.
The Bangor Daily News reported Anthony Hourihan, the company’s director of land development, told the paper that the company ultimately wants to be out of the leasing business. The land use plan also outlines public access areas for recreational activities and identifies several areas the company says could become economic development sites.
Hourihan told the paper the company has shared drafts of the concept plan with local and county officials and development groups and that the next step is to present the plan to the Maine Land Use Planning Commission, likely later this fall.
The company’s plan also would open new lots around the Fish River lakes for development, away from the lakes’ shores but with access roads or trails to the lakes.
In 1997, the paper reported that a poll of existing leaseholders revealed that 212 of 233 respondents said they would like to purchase their lots of they had the chance. But Cheryl St. Peter, secretary of the Fish River Lakes Leaseholders’ Association, told the paper leaseholders remain concerned about the cost of the lots under Irving’s recent proposal.
