S. Korean trade officials scout Maine yachts

Two trade officials from South Korea toured Midcoast boatyards last week, scouting out yachts for which they said there is a growing market in that country’s coastal provinces.

The Ellsworth American reported Christopher Shim, director of the New York Trade Office for the Jeollanam-do Provincial Government, and the trade office’s general manager, Jeena Kim, visited Brooklin’s Center Harbor last week on a tour of local boatyards.

The trade officials said that they hope to bring a yachting culture to the province and country, which is climbing the global economic ladder and is now the world’s 12th largest economy.

Trade interest in Maine yachts has increased in recent years in Asia. Late last year, representatives from Chinese boating magazines visited Maine. Tony Kieffer, a managing partner with the Portland-based trade and investment advisor MaineAsia, said the concept of yachting is changing in that country as its middle class continues to grow and the yacht gains popularity in a business context. Kieffer said most yachts still come from U.S. and European firms.
