Irving sawmill folds, leaves 73 jobless

A sawmill in Nashville Plantation is closing and leaving 73 people without jobs, making it the third manufacturing closure announcement in three days.

J.D. Irving Forest Products, based in New Brunswick, Canada, is shutting down its Pinkham sawmill in Nashville Plantation in two weeks, the Bangor Daily News reported. Mary Keith, a spokesperson for Irving, blamed the U.S. housing slump for the closure and told the paper it would be "indefinite." Keith said the company was working to relocate the displaced employees to Irving's other sites, the paper reported. Prior to the closure announcement, the mill already had reduced its operation to three days a week, Keith told the paper.

Yesterday, Toronto-based Fraser Papers Inc. announced it would temporarily close its Ashland lumber mill, putting 70 out of work, and on Wednesday, Ohio-based NewPage Corp. said it was shutting down a paper machine at its Rumford mill and cutting 60 jobs.
