It’s aquaculture vs. aviation for Trenton aquaculture site

Bird strikes might seem like a strange worry for a potential aquaculture site in Trenton, but that’s exactly what was on the minds of many of the 40 attendees at a public hearing for a proposed site in the Hancock County town last week.

That’s because, according to the Ellsworth American, Bar Harbor Oyster Co.’s proposed farm in Thomas Bay would have cages 2,000 feet from the end of the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport’s seaplane runway, which could attract seabirds that might be dangerous to aircraft using the airport.

“The town of Trenton has a school very close to the airport, and the firehouse, town office — planes fly right by here,” Bill Stockman, leader of a Trenton citizens group opposed to the oyster farm, said at the meeting, according to the American. “All of the workers and millions of visitors to Mount Desert Island go under the flight path at least twice.”
