It’s Brewer vs. Rumford for proposed $250M liquefied gas facility
A Boston-based development group is proposing the construction of a new natural gas liquefaction and storage facility, and has its eyes set on either Brewer or Rumford.
According to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network, large consumers of natural gas, like hospitals and electricity generators would purchase large amounts of gas during the summer when prices are low. The energy source would then be super-cooled and stored in a liquefied state for the large energy consumers to use during Maine’s cold winter, when gas prices are usually higher.
“So it’s their gas. And then when they direct the facility to release it, it’ll be released and they’ll be able to utilize that gas at the lower price and not the peak demand prices,” James Cote, a spokesman for developer Maine Energy Storage, told MPBN.
The proposed $250 million project still has to go through a number of regulatory procedures before it receives the go-ahead, according to MPBN.
