State officials say that the fiscal year 2016 was one of the most successful years in the 42-year history of the Maine State Lottery with record highs for ticket sales, prizes paid to winners, commissions earned by retailers and contributions to the State of Maine’s General Fund.
“Thanks to the biggest year in our history, the Maine Lottery contributed over $56 million to Maine’s General Fund, the highest total to date,” Gregg Mineo, director of the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, said in a release. “These funds will provide much needed revenue to support programs and services that benefit Maine citizens all across the state. In addition, over $600 thousand in revenue was provided to the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund to support wildlife and conservation programs in Maine.”
Total Lottery sales were $272.3 million, with Maine retailers earning $18 million in commissions — both all-time high totals since the Maine State Lottery was established in 1974. January’s $1.6 Billion Powerball jackpot helped to drive draw game sales up 50% over fiscal year 2015. Instant ticket sales totaled more than $210 million due to strong sales at the $5 and $10 price points.
