Jackson Lab mulls expansion in Fla.

The Jackson Laboratory, Hancock County's largest employer, is considering building a new laboratory in southwest Florida because of that state's investment in a biomedical research cluster.

The new lab would specialize in personal medicine and allow the nonprofit to "play a pioneering role" in the growing area of medical treatment based on a patient's specific genetic makeup, Jackson Lab President and CEO Rick Woychik said in a press release. Joyce Peterson, Jackson Lab's public information manager, told the Bangor Daily News that the organization is considering Florida because of the state's multi-million-dollar investment in developing a biomedical research cluster. The lab is in talks with officials in the Collier County area near Naples who are in the process of developing an incentive package for the lab, Peterson said. The institute would have about 200 employees and an annual estimated operating budget of about $100 million in the first few years, she said.

Woychik said the organization's core operations will remain in Maine, and that a final decision is still several months away. "The project is in the talking stages, and there is still a lot of planning that needs to be done," he said in the release.
