Wausau Paper's Otis Mill in Jay has been sold to a local couple who plan to turn it into a business and industrial complex.
Mary Howes and Tim DeMillo on Tuesday finalized the sale of the mill, which Wisconsin-based Wausau shut down in June, according to the Sun Journal. The husband and wife are principals of Otis Ventures LLC and also own Howie's Welding and Fabrication Inc. in Jay. Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments financed the purchase with up to $400,000 of working capital approved for the project, but the sale price was not disclosed. The sale includes all of the building's assets, including the paper machines, and Howes and DeMillo plan to sell whatever equipment is not needed for redevelopment. The couple told the paper they plan to preserve parts of the building and are looking at developing it into warehouse space for businesses.
The mill was built in the late 1800s and owned for many years by International Paper. More than 200 employees were laid off when Wausau shut down one of its paper machines last December and then idled the second in June.
