The Jackson Laboratory has won a whistleblower lawsuit filed by a former employee who accused the lab of firing her for her complaints about the lab's treatment of mice during disease research.
The Bangor Daily News reported a nine-member jury issued an 8-1 verdict in favor of the lab in connection with allegations filed in 2010 by Santina Caruso, who worked at the Bar Harbor lab as a veterinary technician for several months in 2008.
Laboratory officials said Caruso had been fired for her confrontational demeanor and failure to follow the lab's policies, not over her allegations that mice were not treated humanely in the lab.
An attorney for Caruso said his client has not decided if she will appeal the decision and said during the trial that federal officials looking into the matter eventually agreed with Caruso. Federal officials from the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare said in a 2008 letter that an investigation was merited.
An attorney for the lab said that the animal welfare concerns in the case have since been resolved.
