Maine Med plans $40M Portland expansion

Maine Medical Center has submitted designs for a $40 million expansion project to the city of Portland.

The Portland Press Herald reported the 44,000-square-foot building addition would add four operating rooms to the hospital's Portland campus and call for hiring an additional 49 employees.

Submission of the project comes less than a month after the hospital declared a hiring freeze, citing a $13.4 million operating shortfall through the first half of its fiscal year. The hospital attributed that shortfall to a decline in patient volumes.

Mark Harris, MMC's senior vice president of planning and marketing, told the paper he could not answer questions about the proposal as the hospital's board has not given formal approval to the expansion plan.
