JAX plans to add 50 jobs

The Jackson Laboratory, which earlier this year cut dozens of jobs, is planning to hire 50 workers.

In January, the lab instituted a hiring freeze, and then in March cut 55 positions and reduced hours for 315 employees in order to cut costs and boost revenues. Hours for those 315 workers have been restored, and workers laid off in the spring have been invited to apply for the 50 jobs now open, Chuck Hewett, the lab's vice president and COO, told the Mount Desert Islander. Hewett said an increase in mouse sales and money from the federal stimulus package have helped boost the nonprofit organization and allowed it to add staff.

With 1,400 employees, the Jackson Lab is largest employer in Hancock County.
