Jefferson sawmill faces $79K in OSHA fines

A sawmill in Jefferson faces $79,310 in fines following an investigation by federal workplace regulators.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed fines for NC Hunt Inc. after finding what it says were three repeat violations and seven serious violations of safety standards.

In a press release, the agency reported the repeat violations included not using "energy control" procedures to prevent employees from being struck by a logging carriage and a lack of barriers and warning signs near the logging carriage path. Investigators also found elevated walkways without required handrails.

Penalities for those repeat violations total $53,900. Another $25,410 in penalties was recommended for other alleged violations, including having an ungrounded extension cord and a work truck with a defective emergency brake. The company now has 15 days to respond to the OSHA action.
