Jerry Reid tapped as Maine’s environmental protection chief

Jerry Reid, resources division chief at the Maine's Attorney General's Office, has been named to serve as Maine's next Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection.
Maine Gov.-elect Janet Mills has named Jerry Reid, resources division chief at the Maine’s Attorney General’s Office, to serve as the state’s next Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection.
The nomination was announced Tuesday, a day before Mills will be sworn in as the state’s first female governor in an evening ceremony at the Augusta Civic Center tonight.
Reid, 49, has more than two decades of experience in the Maine Attorney General’s Natural Resources Division, where he has served as chief since 2017. He specializes in matters related to the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, hydroelectric licensing, land use law and environmental legislation, according to Tuesday’s announcement from Mills’s office.
He began working for the Attorney General’s office in 1994. He’s an alumnus of Wesleyan University and the University of Maine School of Law in Portland.
Mills said in a statement that “Jerry has worked tirelessly for decades to protect our environment and natural resources through his work in the Attorney General’s office, and I know firsthand from my experience working closely with him that he has the talent and ability to lead this important agency.”
Reid said: “I have been privileged t work on some of the most important environmental and natural resources facing Maine in the Attorney General’s Office, and I’m excited by the opportunity to continue that work in a new role.”
The Environmental and Natural Resources Committee and the Maine State Senate will consider Reid’s nomination.
Maureen Drouin, executive director of Maine Conservation Voters, released a statement calling Reid an “excellent choice” given his depth of knowledge and experience in the Attorney General’s Office.
“Mr. Reid’s selection shows that the Mills Administration is serious about tackling climate change protecting human health and ensuring our air, land and waters are protected,” she said.
Reid lives in Harpswell with his wife and three daughters.
