Job Corps suspends new enrollment

The U.S. Department of Labor has suspended enrollment of new students at 125 Job Corps centers across the country, including two in Maine, as part of a budget-cutting measure.

The Bangor Daily News reported that two Job Corps centers in Bangor and Limestone were included in the move to curb the program from going over a budget that fell $24 million in 2012.

The program will continue to provide free job training in manufacturing, construction and other careers to students already enrolled in the program while those awaiting enrollment will largely have to wait.

Edmund Fitzgerald, a Department of Labor spokesman, told the BDN that the department will make exceptions for applicants who are homeless, runaways or in foster care.
