Job creation focus of state summit

A job summit convened yesterday by Gov. John Baldacci drew people from 80 businesses in the state, while Maine's state and federal Democratic leaders called for federal incentives to aid job creation.

The purpose of Baldacci's summit, held at the Augusta Civic Center, was to solicit feedback from businesses on boosting job creation in Maine, according to a press release from the governor's office. Among the recommendations developed by the business attendees was stability in the state's programs aimed to help businesses grow, more clarity in permit processes, easier access to economic development programs and a stronger alignment between the state's work force and educational opportunities.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree urged Congress yesterday to pass another stimulus package that would include tax breaks for small businesses that add employees, infrastructure improvement funds and other financial aid for states, according to the Bangor Daily News. Pingree's daughter, Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, a Democrat, and Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell also said their party was calling on Congress to pass the bill. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $154 billion jobs bill in late December, and the Senate is currently working on a similar initiative, according to the paper.
