Jobless rate 7.7% in May

Maine's unemployment rate inched up to 7.7% in May, according to the Maine Department of Labor.

The seasonally adjusted rate was a slight increase from 7.6% in April and down from 8.0% one year ago. The number of unemployed totaled 53,800, a drop of 2,100 from May 2010. There were an estimated 596,500 nonfarm payroll jobs in Maine in May, up 800 over the month.

Nationally, the unemployment rate last month was 9.1%, while the New England average was 7.9%. Rates in other New England states ranged from 4.8% in New Hampshire to 10.9% in Rhode Island, according to the DOL.
