Pattie Aho, a former Pierce Atwood attorney, has been named acting commissioner of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
Aho has served as deputy commissioner of the DEP since February and replaces previous Acting Commissioner and DEP Air Bureau Director Jim Brooks, according to a press release from the agency. Aho has been active in environmental advocacy for more than 25 years and also serves as the DEP's liaison with the Legislature and the governor's office. She also represents the DEP on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative committee.
The post of DEP commissioner has been in flux since April, when Maine Attorney General William Schneider deemed Darryl Brown, sworn in by Gov. Paul LePage earlier this year, unable to hold the job because of issues related to a conflict of interest. As acting commissioner, Aho will work on improving permitting processing time and lead the agency's new rulemaking process established by the ratification of regulatory reform law LD 1, work scheduled to start this summer.
