Maine's unemployment rate dipped to 6.9% for April, marking the first time it has fallen below 7% since December 2008.
According to the latest preliminary estimate from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 48,600 Maine workers were unemployed in April, down 3,100 from last year, when the unemployment rate was 7.3%.
The latest seasonally adjusted figures also show a drop from the previous month. Maine's unemployment rate was 7.1% in March.
Nationally, the unemployment rate also dropped slightly, from 7.6% in March to 7.5% in April. The national unemployment rate was 8.1% in April 2012.
Maine's latest unemployment estimates remained slightly above the New England average, which stood at 6.8% for April. Unemployment in New Hampshire was estimated at 5.5%, Vermont at 4.0%, Massachusetts at 6.4%, Rhode Island at 8.8% and Connecticut at 8.0%.
