Jobless rate improves in September
Maine's jobless rate in September took a slight dip, registering 4,100 fewer unemployed Mainers than a year ago.
Preliminary figures from the Maine Department of Labor show a September unemployment rate of 7.7%, down from 8% in August and 0.4 percentage points lower than September 2009. Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network that Maine's unemployment rate compares favorably with the national average of 9.6%.
Maine's unemployed workers now tally 53,100, although this number does not reflect the number of people who have given up looking for work.
