Judge thwarts Samoset expansion

A superior court judge has overturned local approval of an expansion at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

The Rockport Planning Board in April 2007 approved the Samoset's plan to build 49 homes, a spa and community building, but Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm overturned the decision, saying the Rockland Planning Board should have been involved in the approval process since a part of the expansion extends into Rockland, according to VillageSoup. Two residents in a nearby condominium development appealed the approval in May 2007, the news website reported.

Hjelm is sending the case back to the Rockport Planning Board. Samorock LLC, which owns the Samoset Resort, is expected to appeal the decision.
