A York County judge late last week ruled that Nicholas Curro, owner of three oil companies in Biddeford and Wells, violated the Unfair Trade Practices Act when he failed to honor several hundred pre-paid heating oil contracts during the winter of 2007-08, according to the Journal Tribune.
The decision means Curro is personally responsible for damages and penalties related to bilking hundreds of customers out of tens of thousands after his three heating oil companies -- Veilleux Oil & Service Inc., Perron Oil Inc. and Price-Rite Fuels -- imploded in January 2008. The Maine Attorney General's Office in January 2009 sued Curro and his companies, alleging that he violated the Unfair Trade Practices Act and engaged in unfair and deceptive sales practices.
The lawsuit sought restitution on behalf of the customers and a penalty of $10,000 for each intentional violation of the Unfair Trade Practices Act, according to a January press release from the AG's office.
