Forbes names Portland “most livable” city

Forbes has named Portland the "most livable" city in America based on measures such as income growth, cost of living, crime data and unemployment.

The business magazine said the Portland region -- the magazine used the U.S. metropolitan statistical area that covers Portland, South Portland and Biddeford and its 513,000 residents -- earned high marks for a 6.3% income growth rate over the past five years and its cultural attractions. Forbes also cited its relatively low levels of crime and unemployment. Bethesda, Md.; Des Moines, Iowa; Stamford, Conn.; and Tulsa, Okla., round out the top five. Check out Forbes' list of "America's Most Livable Cities."

To form its rankings, Forbes considered metropolitan areas with more than 500,000 residents and assigned points based on five data sets: Five-year income growth per household and cost of living from Moody's Economy.com, crime data and leisure index from Sperling's Best Places, and annual unemployment statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
