Jury convicts tribal leaders

Two former officials of the Indian Township Passamaquoddy Tribe were found guilty yesterday of misusing tribal and federal funds.

A federal jury in Bangor issued the verdicts against Robert Newell, a former governor of the tribe, who was found guilty on all but one of 30 charges, and James Parisi Jr., the tribe's ex-business manager, who was found guilty on 11 of 21 counts, according to the Associated Press. The men were indicted in March.

During the trial, Newell acknowledged moving or approving moving money from one tribal account to another to meet tribal expenses, but said he never intended to break the law. Parisi did not testify.

Sentencing is expected after the first of the year, the AP reported.
