Kaplan University plans to open a new campus in Augusta for the fall semester, spending several million dollars to convert a former Staples store building at 14 Marketplace Drive into classroom space.
Kaplan University Maine President Christopher Quinn made the announcement at Saturday’s commencement, which featured Maine Gov. Paul LePage as a speaker.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Kaplan plans to offer at its Augusta campus degree programs in accounting, business administration, criminal justice, early childhood development, medical assisting and paralegal studies starting in September, and hopes eventually to add a nursing program. The courses mirror those offered at its South Portland and Lewiston campuses.
Kaplan’s newest campus is located directly across the street from the University of Maine at Augusta.
Kaplan University, headquartered in Chicago, has nearly 50,000 online and campus-based students across the nation. Its parent company is a for-profit corporation owned by the Washington Post Co.
About 1,400 people are enrolled in Kaplan’s in-person and online courses in Maine, and the Augusta campus is expected to add at least a dozen employees to its Maine-based work force of about 180 people.
