Kennebec Journal building sale dies

A mental health agency in Augusta has backed out of a deal to buy the Kennebec Journal's headquarters on Western Avenue, citing extensive needed repairs.

Crisis & Counseling in November signed a purchase-and-sale agreement to buy the 53,000-square-foot building and its 5.28-acre lot for an undisclosed amount, but later determined the upgrades needed to the building are too costly, according to the daily paper, which is owned by MaineToday Media. The agency has been searching for a new location for more than a year because its current offices are needed for an expansion of the county courts.

The paper will put the building back on the market and move ahead with plans to relocate to new, leased offices in the city.
