A local entrepreneur has bought the former ZF-Lemforder factory in Brewer with plans to use it to make buildings out of shipping containers.
Chad Walton bought the 120,000-square-foot building Monday for an undisclosed price, though the property had been listed for $2.5 million, according to the Bangor Daily News. Walton plans to launch a company called SnapSpace Solutions Inc., which will turn unused cargo shipping containers into modular buildings such as homes, offices and emergency shelters. Maine Rural Development Authority is helping to finance the venture, and Walton has partnered with the University of Maine's Knowledge Transfer Alliance and the Advanced Manufacturing Center. Walton has operated a number of businesses in the Bangor area for 24 years, including Aktem Real Estate Investments, Walton Homes Inc. and Turbine Specialists LLC, which does metal finishing for turbines from GE Power Systems in Bangor.
German auto parts manufacturer ZF-Lemforder announced in January 2009 it would close by mid-2010, putting 127 people out of work. Last May, the company's warehouse building was sold to insurance firm Varney Agency's founder, Bill Varney, who said at the time he planned to lease it to various tenants.
