Kennebec Savings uncovers data breach

Kennebec Savings Bank is investigating a data breach of its online banking system to uncover what information could have been compromised.

On March 21, the Augusta-based bank detected suspicious activity related to unauthorized access of its online banking system and shut it down, according to a press release from the company. The company has hired a computer forensics team to assist with the investigation. Preliminary data show that malware compromised the system, but that neither Social Security numbers nor debit and credit card information were accessed. Only Internet banking customers were affected, but so far no unauthorized access to customer funds has been reported.

The online banking system is now running, and the investigation will continue, according to the release.
