The town of Kennebunk may join Portland in requiring some businesses to charge a five-cent fee for plastic bags if a new proposal catches traction with elected officials and voters.
The York County Coast Star reported that the town’s Energy Efficiency Committee is expected to draft language for a non-binding question on November’s ballot to gauge voters’ interest in charging customers for plastic bags.
The ballot question would have to be approved by the Kennebunk Board of Selectmen before going to referendum. If ultimately approved by voters, it would serve as an advisory on how the selectmen should move forward.
Similar to a new rule approved in Portland, the proposal would allow businesses to retain the revenue from the plastic bag fee. It’s not clear how many businesses in Kennebunk would be affected by such a rule. In Portland, starting in April 2015, businesses that derive 2% of its sales from food will have to charge customers five cents for plastic and paper bags.
Dennis Andersen, chairman of the Energy Efficiency Committee, told the selectmen this week that the “fee would be very similar to the one that's up in Portland.”
