Anthony DiSotto was promoted to senior vice president and regional retail leader for KeyBank's New England region, with responsibility for a retail network of 50 branches in Maine, where it is the state's second-largest bank by market share, and 11 branches in Vermont.
He'll oversee a team of 300 employees.
DiSotto previously served as senior business banking relationship manager for the Portland market.
It was a comment from Sterling Kozlowski, KeyBank's top regional official, that caught our eye. He cited DiSotto's “consistent track record for developing and leading top-performing teams.”
In a state where companies have a hard enough time just filling positions, how does a manager foster top-performing teams?
DiSotto, who spoke to Mainebiz while en route from Fort Kent, said the strategy has been to balance talk about performance with an individual's career-development plans.
“The two go hand in hand,” he says.
Goals, he says, are mapped out in a “fluid document” that's continually updated and “constantly changing.”
“It's always part of a bigger conversation,” he said.
Recruiting is also a key part of building teams. While branch managers are typically promoted from within, new hires come from a variety of sources. There are some that come from other banks. There are recent grads. But then he also cited two particular employees who had come from Home Depot and Lowe's Home Center, respectively.
“Those are places where [a customer] might say, 'I'm looking to build this' and you have to figure out what someone needs,” he said. “That carries over to banking.”
KeyCorp is based in Cleveland and has assets of $136.7 billion.
DiSotto knows the territory he'll serve. He went to school in Maine, earning a bachelor's degree at Colby College, and in Vermont, earning an MBA from Norwich University. He lives in Scarborough.
DiSotto joined Key in 2006 as a branch manager, before being promoted to an area retail leader in 2008. In 2014, he transitioned to a business banking relationship manager, focused on growing new and existing business client relationships.
His management style evolved in those positions.
“We're constantly finding ways to engage the individual, to find internal opportunities, ways to enrich them and advance their career. We're constantly talking about their impact on the company,” DiSotto says. “We talk about their plans and how we can help.”
DiSotto maintains an office at KeyBank's Canal Plaza location in Portland and can be reached at anthony_disotto@keybank.com
