Kibby wind farm hearings end

A proposed wind farm in western Maine met little opposition during a three-day public hearing that wraps up today.

Friends of the Boundary Mountains so far is the only group that has voiced concern at the Land Use Regulation Commission's public hearings on TransCanada's plan to build a 44-turbine wind farm on Kibby Mountain in Franklin County, according to the Central Maine Morning Sentinel.

Environmental groups that in the past have opposed wind farm proposals, including the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Maine Audubon, now support this project, which with a 132-megawatt capacity -- three times the size of the existing Mars Hill wind farm -- would be the largest in the state, the paper said.

If the proposal is approved, Calgary-based TransCanada said it could begin construction by early 2008.
