A year-long effort to develop strategies to deal with traffic congestion, create affordable housing and spur economic development in Kittery is looking for public input next week.
At an open house Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Joint Land Use Study for Kittery and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will present recommendations for guiding the area’s future development. The study, organized by the Saco-based Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission, is looking at ways to balance future growth of the shipyard with the priorities of the Kittery area.
Some of the topics being addressed: protection of the shipyard’s military functions, mobility along the Piscataqua River, adequate workforce housing and transportation, business development and preservation of the coastline.
The study group has held a series of public input sessions since March, and to date has developed over 40 recommendations. Those proposals and a draft report of the group’s findings will be the focus of next week’s event, according to the commission’s website.
The open house is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. at the Star Theatre, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery. More information can be found here.
