L-A airport nets $600,000 grant

The Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport is receiving a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to support its expansion.

The grant is being provided under the Small Community Air Service Development Program, which grants financial assistance to small communities to improve air service, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. In July, Collins sent a letter to DOT Secretary Ray LaHood supporting the airport's grant request to fund its planned expansion. The airport began working on a new terminal last month that is expected to open next year, Airport Manager Rick Cloutier told the Sun Journal. The grant could help the airport attract a passenger airline carrier by funding activities such as marketing and promotions.

In March, the airport received $235,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration for an environmental study, and last July the FAA gave it $369,907 to buy land for a runway extension.
