A Lewiston-Auburn developer is under investigation by federal and Lewiston officials for fraud and misuse of federal money.
Officials are looking into whether Travis Soule of New Gloucester misused a loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development earmarked for the replacement of furnaces in three apartment buildings on Pine Street, according to the Sun Journal. Soule, a prominent developer in the L-A area, allegedly forged the heating contractor's name to endorse two checks totaling $50,000, and kept the money. Soule failed to make payments on the loan, and city officials in February discovered he had transferred ownership of the three buildings to Joseph Dunne, a local landlord. No charges have been filed against Soule.
The federal inspector general in New Hampshire is investigating the case on behalf of HUD, and the case could be turned over to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible prosecution, according to the paper.
